Why Industrials modeling is different

Backlog conversion, capacity utilization, and working-capital seasonality drive free cash flow — cyclicality demands stress cases on volume and pricing.

What a 3-Statement Model actually tests

A 3-statement model tests whether you can actually link the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement together — not just build three separate tabs that happen to sit next to each other. The real test is whether your balance sheet balances after every assumption change, and whether you can handle the circularity that shows up the moment interest expense depends on a cash balance the model itself is computing.

Common 3-Statement Model interview questions

Why doesn't my balance sheet balance?

Almost always because something on the asset side and something on the liabilities & equity side were updated independently instead of both flowing from the same cash flow statement — commonly a forgotten link from net income to retained earnings, or a CapEx/depreciation mismatch between the cash flow statement and the PP&E roll-forward.

How do you handle circularity between interest expense and cash?

Interest expense depends on the debt balance, which depends on cash available for paydown, which depends on net income, which depends on interest expense — a genuine circular reference. Excel handles this with iterative calculation enabled, or you can break the circularity deliberately with a debt schedule that uses beginning-of-period balances only.

Walk me through how net income flows to the cash flow statement.

Net income is the starting line of cash flow from operations. From there you add back non-cash charges (D&A, stock-based comp), adjust for changes in working capital, then layer in investing activities (CapEx) and financing activities (debt draws/paydowns, dividends) to arrive at the change in cash — which becomes the new cash balance on the balance sheet.
