Why This Bank? How to Answer the Firm-Specific IB Interview Question
A practical framework for why this firm and why this group in investment banking interviews, with research checklist and strong vs weak examples.
IB · 4 min read
"Why this bank?" is where generic candidates die. Everyone can recite culture, people, and deal flow. Interviewers have heard those three words so many times they stop registering. They want proof you did homework on this firm, this group, and how it connects to your story.
The short answer
"I am interested in your [group / product] after [coffee chat or public deal detail]. What stood out was [specific staffing, industry, or execution point]. That matches what I want to learn as an analyst because [personal fit]. That is why I applied to this seat, not a generic top-bank brand."
Keep it to 45 to 60 seconds unless they ask a follow-up.
What a passing answer needs
Specific proof
A deal, group, product mix, or conversation detail unique to them.
Personal fit
Why that proof matches what you want to learn.
Clean close
One sentence on why you are recruiting this seat now.
Research checklist before you apply
| Source | What to pull |
|---|---|
| Recent deals | One you can explain: size, rationale, your view |
| Group pages | Coverage industries, product mix (M&A, ECM, DCM) |
| Coffee chats | One specific staffing / culture / training detail |
| News | League table context only if you understand it |
| Alumni | Why people stay or what juniors actually do |
If you cannot fill at least two rows with real notes, you are not ready for that firm's interview.
Weak vs strong
I want to work here because of the collaborative culture, strong deal flow, and smart people. You are a top bank and I would learn a lot from the best.
I am interested in your industrials coverage after speaking with [Name] about how juniors get staffed across both M&A and financing live deals. I have been following your work on [Deal], especially the strategic rationale around [specific angle]. That mix of industry depth and execution is what I want as an analyst, which is why I applied to this group.
Why this group (when they ask it separately)
Group answers should be even more specific:
- Industry you can discuss without Googling mid-sentence
- Product (M&A vs ECM vs leveraged finance) and why
- Proof: coursework, internship adjacent work, or a deal you follow in that lane
Do not pick healthcare if every example you give is tech. Interviewers notice. If the bank is known for a product strength, say whether you want coverage, M&A, or capital markets, and why that lane fits your story.
Boutique vs bulge bracket framing
Bulge bracket: platform, product breadth, training machine, cross-border capability if relevant. Still need a group hook.
Elite boutique: advice-focused culture, senior exposure, intensity of M&A process. Do not insult other banks. Just explain the fit.
Middle market: client closeness, earlier responsibility, industry specialization. Treat it with respect. "You hire non-targets" is not a why-firm answer.
Use Bulge vs Boutique vs Middle Market to keep the framing honest.

Coffee chat to answer pipeline
After every call, write four bullets while they are fresh:
- What they cover
- What juniors actually do
- One memorable line they said
- One follow-up you still want
Those bullets become your why-firm answer. Without notes, you will drift back to culture and deal flow.
Follow-ups that kill generic answers
- Why us versus Bank B on your list?
- Why this group versus another group at the same bank?
- What do you know about how analysts get staffed here?
- Which of our recent deals interested you and why?
Prepare a clean contrast without trash talk. Contrast platform versus advice intensity, industry depth versus product breadth, or training model versus earlier ownership, depending on the firms.
30-second verbal
"I want this bank because of [group or product], and I can point to [deal or conversation] as proof I did the work. That lane matches what I want to learn as an analyst. I am recruiting this seat specifically, not banking in the abstract."
