Walk Me Through Your Resume for PE Interviews
PE resume walkthrough for banking analysts and undergrads: 90-second structure, deal bullets that work, traps, follow-ups, and a landing line that ends on the seat.
PE · 5 min read
"Walk me through your resume" in PE is not a biography. It is a highlight reel that ends on why you want this seat. Banking interviewers have heard fluff. PE interviewers punish fluff harder because they are hiring someone who will live inside diligence and a returns case.
The 90-second structure
Origin (15 sec)
School, why finance, one proof of interest. No high school novel.
Banking / experience (45 to 60 sec)
Group, 1 to 2 deals with your real work, one judgment moment.
Why PE now (15 to 20 sec)
Ownership, diligence, returns. Land the plane on this seat.
Do not read every line. They can see the PDF. Your job is prioritization and argument.
Deal bullets that work
Weak: "Worked on a sell-side M&A process for a software company."
Strong: "Built the operating case and WACC for the DCF. The debate was retention versus new logo growth, and that changed the multiple we showed in the football field. I learned to pressure-test growth before arguing exit."
Include:
- What you owned
- A number or tension
- What you learned that transfers to PE
If you cannot name your work product, do not claim the deal as yours. PE interviewers dig.
Undergrad version (no closed deals)
Use:
- Course projects or case comps labeled honestly
- Internship work product with clear ownership
- A public company you modeled for training
- Club diligence memos if the work was real
Never invent staffing. Invented deal stories die on the first follow-up.
Sample 90-second skeleton
"I studied [X] and got interested in finance through [proof]. I joined [group] where I spent most of my time on [sector]. On [Deal A], I owned [tabs / analysis], and the key tension was [judgment]. On [Deal B], I [second proof]. Banking taught me how processes and models get deals done. I want the principal side: diligence that changes price, and living with the returns case after close. That is why I am recruiting PE, and why your focus on [firm angle] fits."
Fill brackets with truth. Do not force a firm compliment that could apply to every fund.
What not to do
- Chronological laundry list from high school
- "We" for work you did not touch
- Ending without Why PE
- Dumping technicals unprompted for five minutes
- Apologizing for your school or group for thirty seconds
- Reading GPA and club list like a teleprompter
IB vs PE resume walks
IB resume walk
Often ends on why banking or why this group, with process and coverage fit.
PE resume walk
Ends on principal diligence and returns ownership. Same resume, different landing.
Follow-ups this walk invites
| Follow-up | Be ready with |
|---|---|
| Tell me about a deal | 2-minute deeper version of Deal A |
| Why this firm | Thesis, not flattery |
| Walk me through an LBO | Structured six-step tour |
| What would you diligence first? | Sector-specific first questions |
| What did you actually own? | Tabs, checks, and judgment calls |
Stack those behind the resume walk: Why Private Equity?, Tell Me About a Deal, Deal Sheet, Walk Me Through an LBO.
Practice drill
- Record once on your phone.
- Cut anything that does not change their view of you as an associate.
- Time it. If you are over 2:00, cut school clubs first.
- Re-record until the Why PE landing is calm and specific.
- Have a friend interrupt with "what did you personally do?" twice.
Weak vs strong openings
Weak
So I was born in... then I went to high school where I did... then college... then banking... and now I think PE is interesting.
Strong
Finance major, coverage banking in [sector], two deals where I owned the operating case and QoE bridge. I want PE to sit on the principal side of diligence and returns.
30-second emergency version
If they say "keep it short":
"Banking analyst in [group]. Owned [analysis] on [deal type]. I want PE for principal diligence and living with the returns case. Happy to go deeper on [Deal A]."
Common PE traps after the walk
Once you finish, they may ask why not stay in banking, why not HF, or why this strategy. Have one sentence each. Banking taught process; you want ownership of the investment decision. HF is more mark-to-market trading or public investing; you want private diligence and hold-period value creation. This firm fits because of sector focus, fund size, or investing style you can name without a brochure dump.
If you freeze on "walk me through your resume," you usually prepared chronology instead of argument. Rewrite the walk as an argument for the associate seat, then practice until the chronology is just scaffolding.
Practice on SheetRank
Build LBOs until your resume walk can honestly say you understand how entry, debt, and exit drive MoIC and IRR. Verbal PE recruiting is easier when the model is not theoretical.
