Why This PE Firm? How to Answer the Firm-Specific Interview Question
A practical Why this firm answer for private equity interviews: strategy fit, people, process signals, research checklist, and scripts that are not generic.
PE · 5 min read
"Why us?" in PE is where generic candidates die. "Great platform, collaborative culture, strong returns" fits every fund on your list. Interviewers want evidence you know their strategy, check size, and how associates actually spend time. Treat this as a homework test with a personal closing sentence, not a compliment parade.
The short answer
"I am recruiting your firm because your [strategy in one line] matches what I want to learn: [underwriting or value-creation angle]. I spoke with [Name] / followed [deal or sector], and what stood out was [specific]. My background in [banking group / modeling / industry] maps to how you diligence [X]. I want to do that work here, not at a generic top fund."
Fill every bracket with real nouns. If you cannot, you are not ready for that interview.
The structure that works
Strategy fit
Sector, geography, check size, control vs minority, value creation style.
Proof you did work
A deal they announced, a portfolio theme, or a conversation with someone at the firm.
Why you
One skill or experience that matches how they invest.
Research checklist before the interview
| Topic | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Fund / strategy | Flagship vs growth vs sector fund |
| Check size | Equity check or EV range if public |
| Recent deals | 1 to 2 you can discuss intelligently |
| Value creation | Pricing, add-ons, ops, M&A |
| People | Who you met; what they said about the job |
| Process | On-cycle vs off-cycle vibe if relevant |
If two rows are empty, spend another hour before you walk in. Empty rows produce empty answers.
What not to lead with
- Prestige ranking as the thesis
- "Lowest hours among mega-funds" as the reason you applied
- Complimenting AUM alone
- Confusing them with a different firm's famous deal
- Claiming sector love with zero evidence on their portfolio
- Copying a "why PE" paragraph and swapping the firm name
Megafund vs middle-market framing
Emphasize complexity, resources, process rigor, and what you want to learn at scale.
Emphasize ownership of analysis, closer portco access, and learning the full deal cycle faster.
Both are valid. Match the firm's self-image. Do not praise mega-fund "resources" in a middle-market room that sells ownership and speed, and do not praise "you get more responsibility" at a mega-fund without pairing it to how their associate model actually works.
If you only have 20 minutes of research
- Read two recent deal press releases
- Note sector and rough size
- Find one portfolio company you can explain in three sentences
- Prepare one thoughtful question about how associates split modeling vs diligence vs portco work
That is enough for an honest undergrad or first-time off-cycle answer. It is not enough to bluff sector expertise you do not have.
Sector and product specificity
If they are known for software, healthcare services, or industrials, your examples should live there. If they run a dedicated growth fund and a buyout fund, say which seat you want and why. Mixing strategies in one paragraph signals you skimmed the website homepage and stopped.
Must-haves
Strategy + proof
Length
45-60s
Kill shot
Generic adjectives
Follow-ups you should expect
- Why not Firm B on your list? Be honest without trashing. Contrast strategy or learning style.
- Which of our deals would you have passed on? Advanced; only if you can defend taste without arrogance.
- What do associates do in the first six months here? Answer with what you heard in chats, not a LinkedIn fantasy.
- Why PE now versus staying in banking another year? Keep it short and firm-linked.
Practice drill
Write Why Firm answers for two different funds on your list. If more than two sentences are identical, you are still too generic. Read both aloud. Each should force at least one unique proper noun: sector, deal, person, or geography.
30-second verbal
"I want your firm because [strategy line], which matches how I want to learn underwriting. I followed [deal or spoke with Name], and what stood out was [specific process or value-creation detail]. My [banking / industry] background maps to that work. That is why I am recruiting this seat, not a generic top-fund brand."

On Project Apollo, underwrite like an associate and keep notes on what the firm would actually care about in diligence. Those notes become better firm answers than adjective lists.
